Phishing attacks detected in 62% of finance domains examined

Recent research conducted by BforeAI highlights emerging trends in phishing and spoofing within the financial industry. From January to June 2024, a total of 62,074 registered domains containing financial keywords were identified. Of these domains, 38,737 (62%) were linked to phishing attacks aimed at authentic institutions through spoofed websites.

The study suggests that the surge in phishing and spoofing incidents can be attributed to the accessibility and simplicity of phishing kits. Additionally, the utilization of Deepfake technology has made spoofing even more straightforward for malicious actors.

Prominent financial entities were prime targets of these attacks, indicating the preference of malicious actors for high-profile brands. Conversely, smaller firms prove to be more challenging to spoof, as such attacks are more easily detected and remedied. Furthermore, the impact of a spoofing incident on a smaller firm would be limited compared to a large corporation.

The research underscores the potential consequences for businesses affected by phishing or spoofing attacks, such as:

  • Financial losses
  • Increased strain on security defenses
  • Damage to brand reputation and customer trust
